BCM Legs/Shanks

Okay, I guess I should rephrase - Such varieties as the clean shanked Cuckoo, which far as I know, has been created because of commercial breeding of Cuckoo Marans (especially in Europe) has sadly turned people in America to believe that is what's right for all Marans. Especially when they see all hatcheries carrying it.

french black copper marans has feathers on outside of legs and down the outside toes. clean legged black copper marans are english

Incorrect, no country accepts clean shanked BCs in it's Standards.

Look at all the outside of Marans breeding that is going on within the Marans to make new color varietys. These new genes did not just show up in the Marans. Some are doing a lot of out crossing. Money makes people do a lot of weird things. Don

Both are spot on. The British crosed Light Sussex & Barred Rock into French Cuckoo Marans to make sexing easier, in the process they removed the shank feathering.

If even that. . . A clean shanked Black Copper in my opinion is a shame. I find it sad that people try and say clean shanked Marans are proper in the US.

Illia, I fail to follow your reasoning that it is a shame that people think clean shank Marans are proper. Clean shank Marans have been in the USA for many years. If someone wants to breed clean leg Marans that is fine with me. Look at all the outside of Marans breeding that is going on within the Marans to make new color varietys. These new genes did not just show up in the Marans. Some are doing a lot of out crossing. Money makes people do a lot of weird things. Don

It is a shame to sell them to unsuspecting people who do not know the proposed standard and are selling the birds as "proper" Marans.

The clean shanked birds came here first as the perth line from Australia and they are clean legged cuckoo... They also embrace clean legged marans...as does Belgium. It is their standard. I am NOT speaking of BCM... but of Cuckoo.

You know, it depends on whether or not the unsuspecting person cares about the standard or not. There are different reasons why people want to keep a particular breed. If all a person wants is a healthy, happy bird that lays dark eggs, then it doesn't matter if the birds they keep measure up to one SOP or the other in every single respect; what matters is that the birds are healthy and free of physical defects.

But if a person is interested in birds that meet a particular breed standard in every single respect; because they would like to breed, show, or to have the enjoyment of owning beautiful, flawless, correct birds, then they need to read the standard and reach out to breed club folks to ask questions. And if they they don't take the time to do that, then who's fault would it be that they are unsuspecting? Being an unsuspecting person is sometimes a choice

What I find puzzling is when people set out to buy breeding stock but don't bother to learn much of anything about the breed before they purchase their stock. It's fine if you make mistakes and chalk them up to a valuable learning experience; everyone does that. But when some of these people get on line and trash the fiendish swindlers who ripped them off, I always end up wondering if maybe they were a little careless or lazy about doing their research.

The Cuckoo Marans from Australia did not go to the US until 1964, I believe they were known in the US way before that.
Belgium follows the Common European Standard for Marans as does all the EU except the UK. No variety of clean shanked Marans is accepted.
Australia recognises both, but clean shanked Marans are not known to exist anymore.
