Very sad. A red flag in this article for me was "She added that insect-eating birds seem to be most affected. Warblers, swallows and bluebirds have been impacted." I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if this was poisoning from a pesticide being passed from the bugs onto their predators. The same thing happened with DDT and birds of prey years ago, but songbirds continue to suffer similar fates with no action being taken to protect them against the pesticides killing them.

Years ago a phenomenon was recorded in the USA where a species of bird (I think the dickcissel) left the country southward for the winter, but during their return the next summer only a fraction of the birds came back. This was because almost the entire population gathered themselves in an agricultural area of Venezuela and were poisoned, albeit intentionally.
