I came out to the coop and found my 2 year old hen with blood all over her beak. She appears to be in a lot of pain and can’t eat when we give her meal worms. She tries to peck but pulls back like she’s in pain.

I can’t find the source of what happened. There’s no blood anywhere. She’s already in bad shape due to reproductive issues. She’s supposed to get an implant next week)

I’m not sure what to do for her in the meantime.

Any advice is appreciated!

You will need to supplement your fine photos with a bit more information.

Can you see definite cracks in her beak? Is the lower beak also damaged? We need to know how bad the damage is and if the beak is in danger of coming apart and her losing it.

FYI, the beak is the most sensitive part of a chicken's body, and when damaged, hurts more than you can imagine. This is causing stress and even shock, so treat for that with electrolytes with a little added sugar in the water.

If you have any clear acrylic clear nail polish, try giving the beak a couple of very thin coats so it will dry quickly. In fact, hasten the drying with a blow dryer so the fumes will affect her to the most minimal degree. Do not let her get any in her mouth as it is toxic.

I don’t see any major signs of breakage… I circled the part I think could possibly ne a crack but it’s hard to tell. She won’t let me clean it very much. It looks like the whole outside layer came off?

I will treat with your suggestions. Thank you!

Photo from a few days ago. Her top overlapped so the tip is definitely broken at a minimum.

Update: we had a vet appt Wednesday. Tillie got the Suprelorin implant. We’re hoping it helps with the swelling of her reproductive organs and helps her body heal.
Her beak is a little better and not as sensitive. She can eat crushed up/powdered feed but still can’t peck at grass and things successfully, although she tries.

She is pretty underweight. In two weeks she went from 4lbs 9oz to 4 lbs 2oz.

The vet prescribed syringe feeding her Critical Care Omnivore (only 20ml per day which doesn’t seem like enough as there’s only 30kcal/tbs) so if my math is correct, she’s only getting an extra 60 kcals.

I’m open to any ideas of how to put weight on her fast!
