Sanity is subjective
I grew up in black bear country. I've also hunted bear. First, unless you are a skilled and practiced hunter, the idea of taking on a bear is bad. There is also more to scaring off a bear than loud noises. Adolescent/juvenile animals are unpredictable, when you scare them you trigger the fight/flight instinct. Depending on circumstances which one you get will determine if the bear runs away, or mauls you. Passive or semipassive options are your safest route. Strong fencing, heavy duty hardware, and a stout electric fence would be my best recommendation. Along with professional assistance from local DNR and AC.
