This morning my parents heard my dog barking and thought he was just barking because he does it all the time. I went to check on the chickens this morning and only one ( ironically named Bear ) was left. The siding of the coop was ripped off and the back foot opened a crack. My dad found all 3 of their bodies in the woods they looked like they had started to be eaten. We have new chicks in the brooder, how will we prevent it from coming back. I’d be devastated if I lost any more they mean a lot to me. Rip Hilary Dusk and eclipse.

I wonder why the bear didn’t take Bear, it might’ve been confused. I don’t know how to bear proof things, I don’t think you even can. I would juts repair the damage, and maybe line the weak areas with steel or something. I’m so sorry for your losses :hugs

There is another thread recently where a bear tried to get into a coop. Electric wire around the coop and run. most predators first examine things with their noses. A good shock should send them off.

Electric fence is your friend with bears. Bait the wire with peanut butter or bacon. Their noses are tender and respect comes quuckly

I've never understood the concept of bating the hot-wire. Last thing I want to do is draw predators closer to my coop.

Zero need to bait the hotwire. Trust me, they will find it.

Ok, ya I thought about that too. I don’t want anything near them.

If there is a known resident bear, it can be good to 'teach' them to stay away with a hard lesson. The bait provides a focused encounter to engage the bears nose and mouth.

Sorry, not buying it. See no reason to bait the bear to a hotwire. I've been around them and hunted them. They sniff "everything" Leary of "everything". Only when they feel comfortable with the situation will they investigate further.

No way in heck would I put bacon or PB on my hotwire bringing them closer " intentionally" to my coop.
