Bear attack!

There is not a electic fence that your going to get a hold of that will keep a bear out. Get rid of the bear. A black bear killed a pig in a field in VA last week. That bear is now dead

I love bears. I live in Maine and they are still a rare sight. We've seen some on our driveway a couple years ago and see their tracks but they steer clear of us. Every year a handful of bear trappers ask if they can trap the bear on our property. We kindly say "No thank you we love our bears". :)

We're on 63 acres surrounded by other large lots & a land trust, so they don't bother us. It seems to be a problem in over developed areas. When bear/human territory lines are often crossed. Every bear I've seen including mother bears with cubs run at the sight of humans.

It's sad & unfair to give bears a bad rep, there is a lot more to bear attacks than just a ticked off bear.

I'm originally from GA where there is a season and a bag limit for bear which is usually in the fall. I would imagine it is the same in TN. If you kill a bear outside of the season and get caught - you could get in big trouble. I would contact the TWRA and find out what the requirements are for dealing with nuisance wildlife.

I can't imagine having to deal with bear - the raccoon are bad enough.

Phooosh! I don't think black bears kill humans.................

I wouldn't want to test that theory. We've come across bears while trail riding in Alabama, Georgia. and Tennessee. When those bad boys (or girls) stand up and chuff that is some instant scare the you-know-what out of you... We usually slowly turn our horses and walk away. Never had one come at us thank the Lord.

We did have one raid our campsite one time in the North GA mountains. The ding dongs a few campsites down were grilling and they had a dog. We were not grilling and minding our own business when the bear came visiting. We sat in the car while he rummaged through our stuff and destroyed our tent.

Not sure where you are but here in the California Sierra foothills bears are a common pest for chicken owners. Ive had two nearby friends lose birds to bears over the last few years. Worse, the damage the bears do while busting into a run or coop to get at the birds.

I've avoided bear predation (at least of the chickens) courtesy of a large 8' high fence that surrounds the couple acres or so that the vineyard and chickens are in. Not sure if your electric fence will suffice to keep out a determined bear, but here's hoping so.

Here in CA it is possible, but not necessarily easy, to get a depradation permit. The CA DFW first tries to get the homeowner to take all reasonable precautions and to dissuade the bear from coming back. if they don't g away, and there has been real damage (including loss of livestock), then they will give you a permit to shoot the bear. But then county ordinances apply - some folks live in areas where a hunting rifle wouldn't be allowed. You may need to check into your state and county.

It may not be financially realistic, but a strong wildlife fence may be your best long term solution if the electric fence doesn't do the job. One thing is for sure, the bears will keep coming back until they can no longer get an easy chicken dinner.
