In northern MN, they put electric around the beehives to keep the bears out. It seems to work. Don't worry about the kids - you can either unplug the electric when they're outside, or warn them that touching the fence WILL HURT. They'll touch it anyway, and then learn their lesson. I have 3 grown DS (farm kids), all of whom touched the fence at one time or another. They're fine. Well, mostly, anyway....

IMHO baiting a bear to touch fnecing is asking for problems. You are GIVING a reward of food, that is the exact opposite of the need. A determined bear will NOT STOP at a door, wire, or anything else. Bears have destroyed cars thinking whatever is under or inside them is worth the effort. A hungry bear is DANGEROUS, and cannot be reasoned with.

A shotgun with slugs is my favorite short range weapon for bear. Let them arrest me for self defense. Any large caliber handgun, or .30 cal rifle is OK, but an eye shot or spine shot is best. A bears forhead will stop a common .38 and only give him a headache. So beware of bear. Once they learn where food tidbits are, you will be on the radar forever.

In my part of Indiana, the last bear here died of old age in 1967, a garbage raider, that lived in the swamp. He killed many a careless dog, and was only seen ghostly when the dogs that harrased him made noise in the early hours, when he raided the trash.

In Oregon all repeat offender are sometimes relocated... to popular hunting camp areas.

That must have really made you mad. I hope that an electric fence works. I cannot believe that you are not allowed to defend your animals from the bear!!
