Bear got our chickens :(

hahah I should. I mean seriously, if an animal is causing trouble in a town, why trap it & move it somewhere else. Why not shoot it and get rid of it.. Its not like its a deer or something that cant hurt anyone..its a bear for goodness sakes.. ugh

He was here at 10 last night.. if we had taken my dog out, she would have walked right into the bear... UGH.. and the game commission says they will call us back monday.. Im glad to see they are on top of things.

How many chickens did the bear kill? You said you moved the chickens to the farm, so I wasn't sure.

I can think of a few ways to stop a bear. You could have a couple of large dogs to keep the bear out of your backyard. That is probably the easiest way. You could put boards with nails in them along the outside of the fence to keep the bear out of your yard. Although, a wondering dog may step on the nails also. The third way to stop a bear is to shoot it. It is legal to shoot an animal if you catch it trying to kill your chickens or trying to attack your family. I can assure you that if a bear came to my back porch I would shoot it.

electric fence netting absolutely deters bear...I live in Northern New Jersey where black bear are freakin everywhere...But they specifically bypass my home/yard...We watched a bear lay down and touch our fence - he/she no likey!!! They now bypass my property, really.

We have bears also. Mom and three small cubs have come around three days in a row, bit holes in both of our water containers and bent up our feeder. Our chickens are out and about during the day and not in the chain link enclosure so they were all OK. We were home to run them off, but one of the cubs could not find his way out of the fence. When my husband went out on the outside of the fence to try to chase him toward the gate he was making quite a squalling racket and mom came back. It was quite a tense few minutes but the little guy found his way out and off they went. Yikes!

it got 4.. my whole yard isnt fenced in.. and its going straight to the garbage, which isnt in the fenced in area.. I wont even take my dog out after dark because I dont want her trying to attack it and get herself hurt.. Yeah, we thought about the shooting idea, but we live in a borough and its "illegal" to shoot in the borough. I think the only time you can is in actual self defense & until the bear is actually trying to hurt a person, you cant do anything.. apparently chickens dont count?! Had it been in a town where its legal to shoot a gun, I could have shot him because he killed my "livestock" But there are too many hunters & farmers around here & all its gonna take is him stepping on the wrong persons land, someone will get him. its just a matter of time.

oh thats crazy! I never really minded bears, but after this, I hate them. He comes after dark & before sunset usually, that morning he came around 545 am I believe. The chickens were just waking up. Perfect timing for him I guess.
