Bear!

Bears in Jersey?
Lots of bears in NJ. My daughter lives in Andover - not far from the OP, and has bears crossing her yard almost daily.

OP - electric fence around your run and coop. Put bacon strips on the hot wire so that the bear contacts it with his nose/mouth/tongue so that he gets 'educated'. Once they locate a food source they are persistent - especially this time of year when they are recovering from their winter 'fast'.

UPDATE**

Sorry for not posting/responding to any of this.

Sadly, our final chicken has past away. RIP Debbie. We had her put down, as her 'poop chute' as it was called had been damage, and now her feces were basically coming out of a new hole, which guaranteed constant infection.

But, in regards to all of your suggestions-

We cannot have dogs, so that is out. (Allergies.)
We are the only ones with livestock in our neighborhood, so it would only be us complaining.
We DO have a hunter in our family, but as someone said, it is nowhere near bear season. PS, I'm now Pro-bear hunt, instead of against it.
Electric Fences seem pricey, and I doubt it would be allowed. (LOTS of little kids in/by our house.)
However, the nail boards seem like a good idea, as well as a regular fence. I am taking them all into consideration.

Thank you all.
