AS a veterinarian, do you include chickens in your practice? If so, I'm sure a lot of chicken people would like to know. The ones that would use a vet, usually can't find one with any chicken knowledge. Glad you joined the flock.
 
Amen to that! Laugh. Just today I had to call the university to get a jumping off place from the Poultry Specialist to relay to my *avian* vet. Spoke with a turkey breeder today too, in hopes they might have a go-to person quasi locally (I'm even willing to drive, yeesh) and pretty much learned I'm going to have to educate myself. That's not really a problem, or something I mind doing--I've raised horses long enough that I don't have to rely on the vets for most things--but it would be nice to serve as an understudy somewhere before I just started diagnosing willy-nilly.

Though I do have to wonder with the upsurge in urban chicken rearing, if perhaps poultry will get some more attention in the forthcoming years with the veterinary community. What do you think? Is that likely? Are you hearing/seeing new students with interests in poultry?
 
I've met one other vet near me that likes chickens. A few older guys near retirement age will see them, but not many. I think with backyard flocks becoming popular there will be more small animal practices willing to see chickens eventually. There aren't going to be very many that are knowledgeable though. I will probably end up seeing chickens at some point. Right now I'm new to them and have a lot to learn. I am a relief vet, so I fill in at other practices and he vast majority only see cats and dogs. Only a few will see any birds. Poultry medicine was not popular when I was in school. There was only 1 person planning on going into poultry, but commercial poultry management and backyard poultry management are very different.
