She had them all from 8pm-1 am . . . X-ray confirmed 6 possibly but unlikely 7... so I let her feed everyone moved them out and wiped out the pen area and gave her fresh dry bedding that was more puppy safe than the shredded stuff.

Then of course she had the last puppy, who was the messiest and also the hardest to revive... she was stuck with her head inside, sac off so she needed a bit of help getting started.

Everyones fine now, vet checked everyone over, says if i saw her eat the sac's then just chart her temps and everything should go well.

I'm feeding her puppy food again, with cheese chunks ( or yogurt, keifer or cottage cheese rotated) and wet food plus broth added. She eats 2 big bowls of this 2x a day and I plan on leaving dry food in with her as well.

too cute I bet they have puppy breath

Adorable pups!!

she is!

I took her for a walk to the mailbox today ( about a 1/2 mile) she was happy for the exercise and the break.

I'm worried about keeping her fit through the nursing. she was in good flesh before being bred and I just don't want her to get all run down. I will not be one of those pit bull people with a skinny grump and 4 week old weaned puppies because she runs out of milk!

A friend of mine brought by some treats today and she loves them so I'm adding one 3x a day to her diet. I know its like candy but it makes her happy.

I'm doing puppy food, added meat ( either grain free canned or leftover chicken or stew or chili) and a 'dairy' ( cheese, yogurt, keifer, cottage cheese whatever I have on hand).

I still would like to add a fat ( not that those puppies need anymore fat!)

Also, She plays with her foodbowl ( heavy ceramic type) so I feed her and when shes done remove it. Shes eating about 3x her normal food. . . but i am afraid to leave the bowl in there incase she crushes a puppy with it... is this adequate?

Mama is good about the other animals walking in/out of the room ( i have the AC off to avoid chilling the babies and the door has to be open or the house gets hot) .

All in all this has been a stressful but easy process so far. I told DF today - "we don't really HAVE to find them homes- its only 6!" but I already have homes lined up for 4 of them. A good friend i have not seen in years is coming for the weekend in 31/2 weeks to bond with and pick his puppy and then will drive back up here to pick him up.

Is there any reason we couldnt leave the house for 6 or so hours tomorrow? I've been checking on the family every few hours while we're home and she's doing fine- very aware of puppy positioning and needs. I can wait a week- i just want to go to the fair lol.

I would be anxious leaving that long with puppies this age. I would also put up a baby gate so that the other animals cannot get to her or the puppies while you are away, or even at home. It is not worth the risk of an accident, no matter how good things might look today.

Those babies are precious! Momma looks good too. Right now I am partial to the one with the red ribbon... Still, all of them are so darn cute! Too bad you can't post the smell of babies...

by the way, I agree it's too soon to leave the babies all alone for extended periods of time. Too many things can go wrong too quickly.
