The hens love to scratch around and sit in the grass clippings in the garden after mowing. The seem to like it, but it is it good for them to sleep in at night? Or is straw better for them?

Grass clippings can get slimy pretty fast. A lot of folks use pine shavings. Also long blades of grass can cause impacted crops.

A lot depends on your climate. You might like grass clippings as an ingredient of the deep litter bedding method, but as a bedding by itself, I don't think you would be happy, unless you dried it first.
