This is my first year wintering a hive and I am not sure things are going well :( The hive seems silent and there is what appears to me bits of comb scattered on the ground outside the hive entrance. Any idea what the cause of the comb bits could be? And is a silent hive gone for sure? I'm so sad, I really loved beekeeping!!

I don't have bees, but do know some peeps that do. I cant contact them at random.
Things of concern are some variety of mites. I don't know much more about that. The bits of wax outside may be house cleaning by the bees themselves. It is supposed to be mild weather in next few days. See if you feel comfortable opening, and taking a peak.
