I'm new to chickens. My first batch of hens are now 10 months old. Laying eggs like crazy (average a doz a day for 14 hens) and I'm loven' being around them...............or is it having them around me?

But I've a question about cackling! I love to hear them cackle. Does a hen cackle to announce she's going to lay, that she's in the process of laying, or that she's just laid an egg?

That she just laid an egg an is trying to divert the attention onto her and away from the egg...it's a predator/momma hen thing.

Like you're not cackling too.

Thanks for the "flowers". I love what I do for a living. Not many can claim that.

And I agree with the Impster, beautiful craftmanship.

Well, I guess I'll just have to be happy with the cackling, no matter what it's purpose. I got 14 eggs today from my 14 hens, so they can cackle all they like!!!!!

My chickens are too young to cackle, so I can't help you at all with your question. But I did want to second (or third) the compliments on your work. Exquisite, really. I tried to find some prices but didn't see any..... You know what they say, if you have to ask you probably can't afford it! But I still wondered all the same! You are really lucky to be working your dream like that...but it sounds like you already know that!
