I found BYC while researching what I would need after I said yes to the kiddos (hence momsfolly). I had had a pet rooster as a kid, but that was a very long time ago, and I had forgotten everything.

I was willing to do this for my kids because I did it as a kid and loved it. I also love bird, but don't want to subject cage birds to 3 cats. I started with 4, got up to 14, and am now back down to 10.

I had seen a re-run episode of Sara Snow and she interviewed a family that lived in new york city. They are allowed to keep as many as they want and I thought our yard is at least 3 times the size of theirs and I live in Iowa I thought it would be legal, but its not, but I got some anyways. I wanted fresh eggs is mostly the main reason for getting them, and then the extra reasons are they produce fertilizer and are entertaining.

I think I found it right before i got chicks... i am not sure though.

i have always had a thing for chickens. i think they are beautiful, and it is so pretty to see a couple of good looking hens pecking around a yard. not to mention the eggs that taste like heaven in a shell!
 
1. I found BYC way before I got chickens. Like others have said, I wanted to be prepared and understand what it took to care for them. Two months later I got chooks in the mail.

2. Good question. I still don't know what possessed me. But they are there in my backyard and they give me joy and I love taking care of them. I would like to think that I will always have chickens.

I ordered my chickens in early February. Found BYC in middle February and my chickens came late March.

I had to go check when I signed up. I knew it was very close to the same time I got my chicks.
I got my chicks on May 5 and signed up here on May 8th!
It seems like I have had the chickens and been on this forum much longer than that!

After, I've had chickens for about 8ish years.

I like always having my freezer stored with fresh chicken
