Beginner's Hatch-A-Long

I'm so sorry! :(
That must have been really tough. I dont know if I could do something like that very easily... I pray that your others are going to be healthy and happy!
Yeah, it's always hard to have to put one of the little guys down!

We had to put the one chick down tonight. It was the one that had a ton of blood when it was born, the yolk sac didn't absorb all the way and it's umbilical cord was still attached. It was eating and playing fine and then today it's intestines started to pull down. It seemed like it was in pain. My hubby tried to push the intestines back in but he said there was just too much and they were bleeding. So we only have 3 chicks out of the 18 eggs we started with. I'm grateful for the ones we have but hopefully we will do better next time. I think I'm going to order more eggs and give it another try. Ugh! I must love to torture myself! lol

Oh my gosh...I'm so, so sorry. Wow. You have a ton more strength than I ever could have. My thoughts are with you. And no, don't say you're "torturing" yourself, I'm turning right around and trying again too! We just can't give up. ^^

It looks like I just got one out of my nine eggs... It's day 23 right now and my only chick hatched day 20. I'm keeping the incubator going until day 25, but I'm pretty sad and discouraged.
Maybe I'll try again with some more eggs.

Do you have a picture of the egg they hatched from?

FFAChickenFan: Our first hatch was first of May and we got 14 out of 24, but three weren't fertile, so 14 out of 21. Second hatch: 7 out of 35. Of the 12 buffs, only three were fertile and they all hatched. Out of 12 blue Americana's, we got 4 chicks, 3 fully developed, but never pipped. The eleven we were given never did anything.

I know we've only done this twice, but just in those two tries we've had wildly different results. I hope you try again!

We never knew how much we would learn (and are still learning) when we plugged our LG incubator in for the first time! We've loaded up our two little incubators and are diving into it again! We learn more ea time! Somehow the nailbiting is addictive!

Thank you so much Amanda!

First off, sorry to hear about your less fortunate hatches! I really hope you have better success in the future

Though, it's encouraging to hear that, at the same time. I feel just terrible that my babies didnt make it- like I must have done something wrong! But after hearing from you and everyone else I guess that just happens sometimes- most of mine weren't fertile, from what I'm hearing.

I will try again and hopefully next time I'll have better things to report!

Do you have the light at the big end or little end? It is really hard to tell in the pic, do you see veins?
they are in a egg turner small end so I didn't turn the egg or anything just put it on the light. I am not good at seeing veins I might not the best light to use. My last batch didn't make it so this time I told myself I wouldn't mess with them like I did the others. I might just have to wait till hatch day. I had a few guys tell me that on day 18 its good to put them in warm water to test them before lock down and it helps them get out of the shell easier too? Not sure I still have a lot to learn on hatching eggs. Figure if I can get these to hatch might attempt to buy some.

This is what the Hatching Eggs 101 article says; Turn on your Candler and shut off the lights in the room so it is dark, evenings are best. Hold the flashlight/Candler like the image below and set the egg air cell/fat end down on your hand. This will prevent any light leakage from the flashlight. Your hand protects the egg from the hard surface of the light and helps more of the light to go through the egg.

As long as you are gentle and don't keep them out too long it shouldn't matter if you candle them. This is my second time hatching and I am trying very hard not to open that incubator till day 7 and then I don't know if I will do them all or not.
