Beginning coop construction...

Added a "funnel" to the trigger feeder. It's literally a cheap plastic dollar store serving bowl. We cut the upper rim off of it and cut a hole in the bottom. Yay!

Might make a post later about how we put it together.

Very, very nice!!! I bet you were just super excited to get them out there. This is night 3, or is it 4?...... Idk.. haha. Of my oldest group being outside. Well, in the coop... and it's not 100% yet either. ALL of the HC isn't up yet... which has me freaking a little bit. But my bf keeps chastising me and telling me they'll be fine. So I've just resigned myself to let it go and see.... and if anything happens, I get to say I told you so for the rest of his life!!!

Yes, very happy to get them out there! Well we got the ramp built so now we hope to build the run on Wednesday. I hate having hem cooped up so much but they have more room now than they did in the brooder. They'll have even more room in less than a week. If there is ever a next time on a chicken coop build, I am not getting chicks until after it is done hahaha.

Here's my 28 pound two year old checking the ramp out. I guess, if he is climbing it, it will hold the weight of the chickens haha.

He would probably go live in there with the chickens if I let him. He absolutely adores them. If he can't get out to see the chickens because of rain, I have to play "chicken TV" literally on our TV (YouTube videos of chickens). He'll sit there and say "Hi chickens! I love you chickens! Buh bye chickens!"

I have to mention for a moment, how I realize the location of our coop isn't ideal in regards to rain runoff. The rain water will likely run through t on the slope but it never collects there so that is good. But I am super glad that we put the coop underneath a couple of good tall leafy trees. It hit 84 today and in the full light of the sun, it was exhausting as I pulled weeds from my garden. Went to toss in some of the weeds and a few bugs from the garden into the coop and as I opened it, I got a blast of cool air haha. Granted, we put in a lot of ventilation but the shade from the trees helps immensely in keeping the heat off and out.

Where are you located to have that much leafage so early?

You may want to do some trenching to divert run off from going under the coop.
Once the grass is gone it can make a nasty, stinky mucky mess and erosion issues around your posts.
Unless maybe you plan on deep litter in that area, then it probably won't be a problem.

Is it considered early? I've lived here all my life (Oklahoma) so I don't really know how the seasons unfold in the rest of the world haha.

I may have to look into that. All of the posts are set in gravel to promote drainage away from them instead of having them sit in water for eternity during the rainy season (now through June)

I had planned on tossing a lot of our yard clippings into the run though. Not really deep litter but just to give the girls some stuff to scratch and play in.

Trees are just barely budding up here....but you're quite a ways south of Michigan.
Time will tell how the water flows around the coop....took awhile before the chooks killed all the sod.
