I find it awkward when people hold doors for me. Makes me feel obligated to hurry up for the other person if I'm lagging behind at all, and is especially uncomfortable with strangers. 
Then again, it's kind of standard procedure around here, and I've held open many a door in my lifetime for people, regardless of their gender.
