I got my first chicks 3 months ago. Thought I'd finally introduce myself. I've gotten some much great advice here in the past few months. I'm not really a social media person - but really enjoy this site and the great advice from experienced chicken experts!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I'm new to chickens. Got my first chickens delivered 3 months ago. I'm city born and bred but always wanted to be a country boy. Spent vacations with my dad hiking and camping in NH and for a chance for a career change 25 years ago and moved to NH.
Decided to get chickens (and grow my own garden) after cancer, 30 surgeries, and almost a decade of feeling crappy. While I've always been a healthy eater, the more I learn about industrial agro and poultry, the more I felt that I needed to start growing and raising our own food. So - the chickens are for eggs, garden fertilizer and the freezer. Decided on dual purpose birds as the idea of crosses that grow so quickly didn't appeal to my new sense of eating clean.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
13... so far.
(3) What breeds do you have?
New Hampshire, Barred Rock, Buff Orpingtons and Golden Buff (RSL).
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
So far. Fascinated by the behavior. I did not expect the different personalities.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Before getting sick - hiking, camping, skiing, snowmobiling, ATV'ing hunting. The more time I spend in the woods, the happier we are. Physically- almost all of this are gone to me now.
New hobbies are gardening, beekeeping (again - raising our own food), cooking and baking, reading.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
If you've seen the old TV show, Green Acres... that's us. I'm a NYC guy, formerly an economist, and my beautiful wife grew up on a small farm in NH but hated it. Traded her farm chores with her sis. She cleaned inside, and sister in law did all the animal chores. Now we've begun our own little homestead. 3 grown kids, no grandkids yet (but we are putting pressure on them!) 2 dogs, 1 cat.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Any time I googled anything about raising chickens, postings on BYC always came up with the answers. I love to do in depth research on everything! And there is a lot of really valuable info here!
