What breed are your broody hens Shellz? Look like really good mothers.
I contacted Bart and decided to wait til spring before doing anything. He will have some select new blood stock to work with from this years hatchlings I am guessing. It will be better for me then also. My "Blue blood" orps are doing well and so is the mixed hatchling. I'm still puzzeled over its tail feathers at such an early age. Must be a roo! Your pictures are fantastic! Keep up the good work on the thread.
Believe it or not, all 3 are production birds. The least likely of birds to go broody. Worked well for me! One is a black star that hatched 7 mutt chicks last year. I kept 2 pullets from that hatch & they are this year's broodies. The red sisters are production reds. Their 'real' mom was production red & dad was RIR. I'm thinking I should get another breeder quality RIR rooster. Great birds!
Good for you for your patience on getting Bart's Malines later. Smart move!
Your mixed chick might be a pullet. They tend to feather faster.
Whats the difference between a pullet and a hen? Nothing except the age of the bird! This little guy was hatched on the 28th of July. So in 13 days it has grown tail feathers approx. 3/4 inches long! It has huge lengthy pointy wings also. I will send an updated picture as soon as I can. All I know is this little guy takes a real shine to me and makes me smile very irishly proud!
Thanks oldchick! That's definitely high praise coming from you. I love your 'lorp shots! I had some hatchery 'lorps myself & although they were small, they were beautiful birds.
Heh, heh. Yeah, that's going to be tough. I know there's 2 boys & there's one girl in there that has white markings on her face, that the others don't have.
2 week old pics to come later today!
