(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

It's my sister's fault. She hatched bantams and raised ducks when she was in 4H many moons ago. Fast forward to her son, who requested a duck for his 6th birthday. Where I live is 2 acres large, so with my father's blessing my sister got her son 2 ducklings. Shortly after, 6 chicks. My nephew turns 8 in June this year.

But, I still feel new to chickens.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

2 ducks, 5 roosters, 16 hens.

(3) What breeds do you have?

?? Erm, an ayam cemani, a couple of polish, a blue birchen maran, an olive egger, a couple of wyandottes, three auraucanas, a red star, the others I have no idea.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

The unique personalities each animal exhibits. I love watching the dust baths, hearing the egg songs, rooster crows (just not in my ear), and the motivation they give me to get up in the morning.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Scrolling thru social media, playing casual games, yarn crafts, sewing, baking, reading, gardening

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I live in my childhood home with my father and brother, my sister and nephew live across town and visit everyday. Besides the chickens and ducks, we have one hedgehog, 2 guinea pigs, and a parakeet. I've been unemployed for about a year now, having had a major depressive episode combined with anxiety due to me longer able to cope with my job. This time off has made me realize how much I still like caring for animals in general.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I've been looking for quite some time, having found this place when the chicks first moved in. Now that our flock is as big as it is, the bulk of them having come from a friend as nature hens, I thought it best to be armed with as much info as possible.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens. I know first hand how major depression and anxiety make life much more difficult than it has to be. I outlived two psychiatrists in my younger years ( they both died of cancer, different types) and they gave me a good foundation to build on.

I have been able to go off meds (gradually as instructed) and doing very well, when I manage to keep from reading every shred of info re: covid 19. Empathy is both my strong suit and sometimes my downfall. I feel too much, from too many people and it can be close to overwhelming. BYC is my break from that - and having the many great friends among the membership.

BYC has some depression threads floating around - where you may find some extra support if/ when you need some. I also had agoraphobia for a long period of time but that too was defeated . I am able to go anywhere I want at any time unaided by someone else.
