3yr old hybrid is layer hen looks and act normal. Feeling her she is thin, doesn’t always have full crop at night, but belly full of air, not squishy or hard, it is air, hasn’t layed for months since last molt. No trouble breathing, poopy butt, good mobility for older chick. How can I tell if it’s ascitis or an air sac thing? Vet is not really an option. I would try removing fluid but if I’m wrong that seems bad? She is our favorite hen of our first flock. Her last mate has very yellow poopy butt so I am using Corid in water right now. The air bloat has been going on a month and does get smaller and then bigger. Little interest in crumbles so started mixing raw venison with chick crumbles, ( to not push laying if it’s that) garlic and oregano and seemed to help some. About a tablespoon per chicken. Seems to help but just trying to figure out if they are silently suffering. Thank you!!!

It sounds like my water belly hen. It didn’t feel like water, it felt like air, but that’s what it’s called. How is she now?

I keep 2nd guessing because she still acts very normal. Had to clean butt a few days ago snd noticed vent and swollen abdomen reddish. Added Flock 912 to water today plus usual garlic oregano treats… it looks less red. I’ve decided if she’s still swollen Wednesday, I have supplies to try to drain. I don’t want Tobit something isn’t right and she’s too old to not give it a shot!?
