Below 0° Temps

Thank you.
Really I'm not trying to be mean. I live in Maine even it was cold for me today. I went out and it's 7F with a NW wind of 20mph gusting and I was cold. I asked my birds if they were cold. They said NO. And 1 SLW laid an egg this morning just as I came out to feed, It was almost hot. At noon time I found one of my SLW laying in the nest box but no egg. Singing the egg song though. Went back out about 1315 and she had laid and so had my BO in the same box. So they laid within the hour and both eggs were still warm. If they are eating, pooping, drinking and lively they are fine. If they are sleeping at night they are not cold.

I am going to be sassy.

When having concern about temperature issues and discussing them, we have three main considerations. 1) What is outdoor temperature? 2) What is temperature the birds are directly exposed to? 3) What is wind speed / draft birds are directly exposed to. Those with birds in coops or buildings need to be doing some measuring. Being at a higher latitude does not always mean the birds are having a harder time. My birds are exposed to 28 F and wind that is potentially 30 mph. The heat being pulled away from birds at the moment is much more consequential than what they have to deal with when temperature is below zero with minimal wind.

When your birds are "telling" you they are cold are not, how are they saying it? Mine, as adults, begin saying temperature is a bit low once we dip below the 50's F. As temperature / windchill goes lower they say more and there is a pattern. I think many people are not looking for cold sign in birds until real health issues are well underway.

I feel bad too. You're not alone. I try to remember not to humanize them as much as possible, though I do it to a fault especially when they are sick, cold, hot, etc. They aren't humans and they don't feel temperatures and emotions the same way we do. All we can do is make them as comfortable as possible and keep a close eye on them. We can try anything and everything to keep them safe, but there is so much that we can't control. (I've learned a lot from these birds.)

I'll try to stop worrying now. :p
