I noticed the same thing...with the rate my kids loose lunch boxes and tupperware at school i would not want to spend $35 and have it missing the next week....my daughter has even came home with shoes on that were not hers...
my biggest struggle with packing school lunches is the food restrictions..
we cant pack peanut or ANY nut products
last year we could not pack fish or shell fish products
and in my sons class we could not pack egg products...

all because of food allergies....
Oh that's rough.
I got the boys (toddlers) divided trays for home, from the dollar store, since they break EVERYTHING. I bought DH the bento kit. If he leaves it at work, I'll kill him. I'll stress that it's very pricey and hope he uses common sense.
For now, my kids just use rubbermaid divided types of containers that I got at the dollar tree. It's all in the presentation...and they must like it b/c they all requested bentos this morning.
They had (no pics)
pringles
sandwhich "rolls" (I actually used pita for the bread, don't tell them! ;-) )
Seedless grapes and cut up kiwi fruit
pasta salad
a tiny hershey bar
And a little note on top.
The 3yr old was crying b/c she wanted one. I was making them last night so they'd be ready for the kids this morning. I told her I'd make her one today, but she was very upset. I figured since I had it all out, I'd go ahead and do hers. Her response? "Your baby is happy now."
Henrietta: That box is adorable!!! If you are not careful, you are gonna get me buying more boxes
Sterling: Yay!! Come on mailman
mjsdhs: When we were "city"folks, the school district that my son went to had restrictions that were nuts. Very similar to what you described. Now we are out in the sticks, and our school district here has zero restrictions on what you can send to school in your child's lunchbox, and they let you bring in homemade treats for your child's class as well!!! Glad to hear you are a Nightmare fan too
The whole set is that theme, with pics on the lids of the three boxes.
Asher: That sounds like a terrific lunch- and no your kids are not spoiled at all, just like mine

My daughter will also not eat PEACHES. What are they, CRAZY?
I broke down and ordered the Clickety-Click onigiri boxes she likes so much from an Ebay-er last night. Dangit.
MissP -- We need to all live on a co-op farm somewhere. You be in charge of all the cultured foods, and I'll make lunch from it.
Oh, and I finally got to make mozzarella from fresh raw goat's milk, and WOW, what a difference! It doesn't taste quite as "mild" as the cow's milk, but it was just soooo much easier to make, with really firm curds that scooped right out of the whey and held their shape--I got 100% of the curds out with just a slotted spoon!

Lots of people in the Laptop Lunch and Kid Eats groups on Flickr have expressed SHOCK that I can send all the nut/legume products that I do in Bella's lunch. I guess we're really lucky. We're out in the country, but near a chi-chi new subdivision on a golf course, so her school is big and new. We had to fill out a detailed questionnaire about food allergies, so either there aren't any life-threatening food allergies in the school, or they manage the problem differently. Of course, that could change at any time, so I need to figure out things I'd do if I couldn't pack nut products. Geez, that would include everything from peanut butter to tahini to granola bars to avocados! And EGG products? Does that include baked goods with eggs? HOLY COW!
