Bento Box Fever!

i had egg allergies as a child. having a japanese mother, i always got served raw eggs. i'd break out on my cheeks and itch a little, but i ate the raw eggs anyway. because it was such a mild case and i never really said anything, my mother never made a fuss about it. after a while, my allergies disappeared.

Okay, my oldest ate his entire bento today which shocked me as it was pretty full! The 6yr old came back with some left over and promptly ate it when she got home! She said they don't get enough time at lunch.

She is the only one that wanted one for tomorrow so I started making it and doing cute new things and the boys both decided THEY wanted them. heh Too late, though, I'd already asked and prepared less so they'll have to wait or one Thursday!

So, tomorrow for 6yr old

Octo-dogs (hot dogs made in to octopus) over a "sea" over noodles
Goldfish (of course! to go in the sea)
An apple (requested by the kid)
Some pb wafer cookies
And an empty spot waiting for the boiled eggs to finish cooking. :)

So funny, I beg them to eat good food and they have nothing of eat. Make it cute and they eat it faster than you can say bob's your uncle! Okay, some of this is not super healthy, but better than mcd's! heh I'll get some better groceries once I can get to the health food grocery store.

I cannot wait to get my packages from Ichaban to make them even cuter! And my egg molds! Does anyone boil button eggs? I'm curious if you can boil them to eat. I think it'd be a perfect kid/bite size snack.

Gak! Egg molds could really be my arch-nemesis. I dont know why, but I can NEVER get them right!!! I will try again tonight because my DD wants a heart shaped egg tomorrow...

Love the octopus weiners!!! I have one of those cutters- I think I will use it soon. Thanks for the inspiration Asher

My son saw the pictures of Ninjapoodles' onigiri. He is big fan of rice, white or brown, and I'd love to try making some for him. He's fussy so what to put in the center has me a little stumped. I'm thinking I could sneak in a chunk of tofu marinated in a little soy sauce, cooked chicken. And then I'm stuck. He won't eat tuna and most raw veggies. I could do carrot pieces. We looked at some websites for ideas and a lot of it was wrapped in nori which he doesn't care for. Oh- shrimp! He likes shrimp, that could work. Hmmmm, what else might work oh my bento buddies??

edited with a few more ideas: chunks of Boca burger, miny meatballs, maybe this isn't as hard as I think!

Yeah, you can put anything in the rice balls! It doesn't have to be "traditional." Just be sure and use the short-grain sticky (sushi) rice, and shape the balls while it's really hot, then if you're making them the night before, be sure and wrap them up tightly while they're STILL WARM, and refrigerate. That's the only way they'll retain their moisture.

I had to do Bella's lunch on the fly this morning, because I forgot last night. Luckily I had made a batch of really firm goat's milk mozzarella for "string cheese." I cut it with one of those wavy slicers.

Phew! Just got back from the grocery store with two large shrimp and some veggie hot dogs. We'll start there. Off to steam some sushi rice!
