Best Bantams

Welcome to BYC!

We're glad to have you.

There are many good bantam breeds that meet your criteria. Orpington bantams, at least here in the United States are rather rare so I haven't seen many of them. But, the large fowl Orpingtons do tend to be gentle, so I suspect bantams would be too. Silkies and Cochins are great bantams as well. Their fluffiness makes them great pets and they are docile. However, they don't lay very well (but do go broody often, if you want to hatch chicks!). I have Wyandotte bantams, and I would recommend them as well. My Wyandotte bantams are docile and decent layers, and I really enjoy them. Some other sweet and docile bantam breeds that vary in their egg laying abilities are Dutch Bantams, Plymouth Rocks, and Rhode Island Red.

Hi and welcome!
I've had a flock of bantams, roosters and hens, for the last 10 years. I rescued them from a farm that got out of hand. They are all mixed breeds, as they had different dads. It's a pleasure and fun to see all these different colored plumages.
Some of them have Silkie in them. Silkies have feathers on their feet. If the ground is wet the feathers get wet and the birds sit on their wet and cold feathers at night. Silkies might be better for a dry climate. They also have feathers around their eyes and can't see well.
Bantams are some of the least cold tolerant chickens (I don't know where you live). And they are one of the broodiest kind of chicken. They will be wanting to sit on their eggs all year long. It takes a lot of managing.
That's my experience as the author of A Rooster's Tale (all about my bantams).
