I have a 2.5yo ISA brown who I suspect has an infection. She has laid a couple of lash eggs in the past few weeks, along with some soft shell/broken eggs. And then other days no eggs at all (which is not like her at all, she’s a 1-egg-per-day lady and always has been).
She’s otherwise her usual self, strong red comb and wattles, free ranging happily. Only other thing I’ve noticed is she has been flicking her head a lot (like as if she has water on her beak or something). It makes me wonder if maybe there’s mucus or something in her nose but she doesn’t let me get close enough to have a good look at her head.

Vet is not an option for me unfortunately. Has anyone successfully treated lash egg and can offer any advice?

I’m also in Australia and it has recently become hot hot summer here.

Welcome To BYC

Salpingitis (Lash Egg) is inflammation of the Oviduct. This causes a caseous material to accumulate and yes, it can cause infection.

Antibiotics are sometimes given to offer supportive care and hopefully help with infection. Do you have access to any online (Pigeon Supply) or at local feed stores? Tetracyclines or Amoxicillin would be good choices.

The flicking of the head, check to make sure her crop is emptying overnight, check inside her beak for any lesions or canker and also inside her ears for infection or mites. It may be a good idea to give her a once over for lice/mites on the body too.

If she's not laid an egg and should have, and you notice she starts to decline or look droopy, get some Extra Calcium into her asap. Give 300mg Calcium Citrate+D3 once daily for several days to see if she expels lash material or she may be having a hard time with a soft shelled egg.

Here's more information about Salpingitis (Lash Egg), it's causes and treatments.

Can you get antibiotics online? Through a fish or bird fancier site?
I am curious about this as well.
about 2 years ago (I think) you could buy several types of antibiotics for most all farm life and Auqa / Fish.

However, (being a Trump supporter)... Now you cant seem to find it anywhere.
I use to keep FishMox (amoxicillin) on hand for my critters needs... now you cant find it as if they closed the doors on anything we use on the farm.

BTW.... I think you can make a weak version of Amoxicillin from feeding molded bread to the birds.

People were buying it and using it willy nilly for unverified infections, so antibiotic resistant infections are becoming more common. It was pulled from non script use.
Had nothing to do with any president.
However, I think you can still get some from Jedds.com.
Unfortunately, feeding moldy bread is more likely to kill them than anything else, that's not how amoxicillan is made.

I am aware of the confusions and abuse. But an infection is just that and requires an antibiotic, not a vet or doctor for treatments (which jack up the ("we are the only one that can make it get well Bill$$ exponentially").
There are Many immediate needs and uses for amoxicillin for inflamed injuries and infections outweighs the argument and just.
I raise both-
A kennel of 7 dogs
Farm Flock of birds. Use to hatch and raise 1000+ at at time.
Was raised on a farm...since the 70s/
In addition- Fish benefit from the FishMox as well, Never needed the Ciphromax...

(Respectfully....I have personally witnessed/seen chickens eat baby copperhead snakes which are more concentrated poisonous the the adult. I don't believe a molded bread will kill them.
Heck... I have accidentally even ate many PBJs and other sandwiches with molded bread (many times over the years.... brown bagging it!) and I am still alive 50 years later to attest and affirm such.
BTW... Nether the chickens nor I even had a convulsion, reaction nor fell over dead in regards to such.
Lastly... Guess what? When my bread sits around and I notice molded bread.... it does not go in the trash can... it goes to the birds most all of the time. Its not some wild spore growing in an amazon rain forest cave.)

BUT!
When a dog/bird/other gets ripped by a wire fence, a mild but bad slash, bite, etc from broken glass or in a fight, attacked by various unknowns... We all know how to (or use to) have the ability help cure the infection. But sometimes the extra internal Anti boost is needed and the last thing you want is loose half a paycheck and time off from duties/work (or the job itself) just to get a simple magic pill that use to be readily available (on the shelf) in storage Just for such ER ;ole instance without having to run to mommy or daddy for permission and a doctor$ note.

The fact that Amoxicillin has been around for a quite long time says it all! What resistant strain of an infection is there today that did not exist in the body before? An infection is not a disease (which can build resistance and immune. An infection is just that, an inflammation within the system that the body which is and can normally fight off a certain degree of such (if not severe or overwhelming). Thus an extra boost or the stronger versions for the heightened cases, Ciphro, Penicillin, Magic-Cure All, etc.

Cattle Penicillin as well... but I think you can still get that OTC. I remember giving all of those in my younger days on the farm. The pink liquids, injections, etc...
Once to a female pregnant cow who was injured and the calf was aborted inside where it started to rot.
Another to a horse that cut its leg rather badly on a fence.

Many people have more common sense than accredited by the AMA / Vet.Org and other Gods and know how to use it (PROPERLY) without having to Beg.Ask and OVER PAY for permission by the (time consumption) roadblocks.

BTW... Thanks for the link... Most are still offered.... but (just like a retard eating poison candy) you still have to have to seek a Vet and get his permission first and pray to the Gods they are responsive... Most are after the VISIT or CONSUTATIONS $$$.00 and your credit card number, expiration date and pin.

You had my attention for the first paragraph, and then.....
Unfortunately , most people who buy and administer antibiotics haven't the froggiest idea of what they're doing. They just throw whatever they thing might work at the issue.

Amoxicillin and other antibiotics have been around a long time and are now overused, causing a drop in their effects. Research to new antibiotics is a slow process, and there are in fact certain strains of antibiotics that are heavily restricted because they are the ONLY things known to fight specific strains of deadly bacteria and viruses. Doctors have now had to prescribe several types of antibiotics to fight a bacteria/virus that used to only take one.
An infection is generally caused by bacteria. Bacteria can and do mutate and adapt to their environment.

Respectfully...Yeppers. I concur.
Bacteria (infestation) is the cause of the infection...not the infection itself that antibiotics are to fight. Otherwise (less I be mistaken) amoxicillin would be called an anti(bacterial) agent/drug.

In saying that... Whiskey is my blood born bacterial (helper) fighter. alcohol enters the blood ya know. and last I heard...
Again (respectfully) In such... alcohol kills off some/most bacteria WHICH causes the INFECTION. (At least- less bacteria for the blood cells to fight off.)

The above leads me to this statement... > " Maybe its just my mindeset... but I hate being sick! However!!!! I do enjoy the cure, feeling and getting better!?" LoL

Respectfully, the word "antibiotic" means "against life/life-destroying" and is not specifically targeted to just bacteria, which is why amoxicillin is not labeled as antibacterial.
Whiskey and other alcohols are excellent for topical disinfecting, however applied internally it will affect your liver (the body's biggest detox station) and reduce white blood cells which will lower your immune system response.

This thread is now thoroughly derailed, my apologies to the OP. I will end all further comments on my part.
