best brand of chicken feed?

There is nothing wrong with feeding a chicken cooked egg just not raw, because then they will start eating their own eggs.

Not true I feed mine raw all the time and never had them go for eggs in nest unless one breaks. Egg eating most of the time is from not getting enough protien in diet and or bordom.

Same here.
And i have 100's of hens.

In my case, the wicked egg eater went to jail. While observing the jailbird chicken I realized that she had a problem with insufficient calcium. Any time she eats low-calcium food (eg. treats) she lays a shell-less egg. She used to eat it, but now she just leaves it on her private roost for me to clean up.

Ok. So I've read all pages of this and now I'm concerned. I asked my mother to stop by our local feed store to pick up their chick start. But, she went to another one and all they had was Perina. She picked up a small bag and brought it home.

I filled the girls food container with it, and they want nothing to do with it. Oddly enough, they'll eat it out of my hand. I am going out tomorrow to buy their original food. I'm afraid they won't eat through the night. Will they eat it if they get hungry enough?

Yup.

I just checked on them, they still haven't touched it. Oh well, guess I'll just get their normal food tomorrow. Thanks for your answer.

They sure will. If you put it in front of them they will eat it. Anytime you switch something in their diet could cause and interuption. But after awhile they will get use to it.

I see where someone was negative on the soybeans in the meal. Is this because there was too much soybeans?

This winter I fed my girls their regular feed (a fairly local brand) plus some cracked corn and I gave them slightly cooked (organic) soybeans also. My thinking was to replace some of the protein they were missing since the bugs were pretty scarce. Was this a mistake? They loved them, and I continued to get excellent egg production with no additional light. But now I am wondering.....

Around here it is Dumor, Layena, or Purina plus this brand milled in Alabama. I have stayed away from the Purina, and they don't seem to like the Layena. I hope I am doing right by them. They can forage the yard for several hours a day, and they have a 1600 square foot outdoor run the rest of the time (11 hens, Barred Rocks and RIR, and have recently added 8 young BO)

Any advice from any chickenmeisters would be welcome. I have only been doing this for a year.

whats wrong with purina!?!??! I have been using for a year with no problems!! *my chickens free range also all day, this is just available in the coop)

I second that! Whats wrong with purina????
I started using it just 2 months ago and I can already see the difference, more eggs, much more better looking feathers and they look so much more happier, Im behind Purina 100%

I think I'd like some animal protein, just not from chickens.
I read this article that said that fish meal is great.

I've been using Purina for 3 years. I've had 5 chickens in the last 2 years that appeared to have died from starvation, and impacted with shavings and fiber stuff. So now I am questioning everything I'm doing. I've seen those 5 chickens and a few more eat the shavings around the outside of the food bowl, but not the food. The majority wolf down the Purina like it's the best ever. I now have 2 more who are losing weight with an empty crop at night. I''m not saying the feed is bad. Maybe something is missing that is causing some to eat things like shavings, twigs, dead grass, etc.
