Best breeds for Laying?

I agree with everyone about the buff orpingtons and barred rocks. They both lay very well and are very friendly. We have both and they are great with our kids. And that's even after the 3 year old has chased them around the coop.

The orpington roosters are also very friendly. Since they are a bigger bird, they also lay very well in the winter. We've had the red stars too, and they are very friendly also. we're just kind of partial to orpingtons

They also lay a very nice extra large egg. at least ours do.

No breed is an "egg everyday" breed. It's just not true.

Now if it's eggs you want you should go with a "egg" production breed. Golden comets are friendly I hear but not a pretty bird. I have a friend who had some go broody and chickens don't lay when broody or mothering chicks.

White leghorns specifically for eggs is another but again they ain't much to look at in the yard.

Now me I like variety for my eyes. You won't find rows and rows of the same color flower in my garden. I have eight different breeds of chickens and eight shades of brown in my egg cartons. That is until my EE's and Ameraucana start to lay.

Also it's important that hens that are not fed well won't lay well. I have a friend who thinks she can just throw them a handful of feed everyday let them range and still get a decent supply of eggs. It just ain't gonna happen.

GIGO (garbage in garbage out) just ain't for computers.

Hope things improve for you

Australorps are the best but are bad to go broody. JMO sexlinks are the best layers and will very seldom try to sit (which is very important to me). Some will suggest a heritage bred chicken, but the fact is comparing hybrid to heritage there is no competition.

i have red sex links also black sex link (red star and black star). The red star are sooo sweet and will come to me very easy. my black star they dont come so easy. red and black are egg laying machines. You can sex them at birth. I have had a great hatch rate on them. they are very hearty with all weather types and take confinment great. i got mine from mcmurry hatchery. :)need anything let me know!

thanks

I have 20 red stars and love them all. I raised them when they were one day old. they start laying egge at sixteen weeks old . now 19 wks old i got 20 eggs every day. although they eat a lot and show little aggressivnes but they are a good breed.

I split an order of ISA Browns (red sexlink) from Townline this Spring and they are so sweet. They just turned 16 weeks yesterday and 3 out of 18 are already laying. And they were incredibly easy to raise as chicks. Not one was sick or needed special care. They should be egg laying machines, according to the data on the Hendrix Genetics website, for at least 18 months...then they pretty decline. So you might want to keep that in mind.

In the past we've had...

barred rocks...they will be the first to go when the ISA's can keep up with egg orders, they are the least friendliest of my hens, came from Ideal

EE's...from Privett, total slackers in the egg department from November until February, and our winters are not brutal

Delawares...from Privett, small eggs and not consistent, also slacked during the winter

RIR's...from Privett, my first batch a few years ago were awesome layers even in the worst of winters, this batch...not so much and their eggs are smaller

For looks I love my Murray McMurray Cuckoo Marans and they were my first to start laying at 19-20 weeks the eggs are not that dark but they are very brown and the rooster is a gentleman personality wise I love my Delawares they are just starting to lay at 22 weeks nice brown eggs too depends on what your customers want white eggs or brown....I wanted chickens that were dual purpose so I could raise my own replacements and brown eggs
