Best breeds for newbies?

I would suggest looking into any of the dual purpose breeds as they are more easy going , lots of choices there.
Gresh ! Ivan, in your avatar is looking gorgeous.

Welcome!!. I am also in research mode right now. We just built our coop, and sadly its a small one, the most we can do is 4 Hen's , and that might be stretching it, but if I can do 4, I would do 2 RIR's, 1 BO ( Buff orpington), and 1 Bared Rock. If 3 is all I can doI will be going with 2 RIR's and 1 Bared Rock, we have not decided yet.

Thank you all so much everyone, great info and so much to think about! It's so nice to meet you all. What a great community!!

Thanks! He's really flourishing. I wish I had a more open budget so that I could breed him. Things are just so tight, I can't find the funds to buy good-quality birds, let alone the things needed for breeding

Someday, when by faith my budget is better, I'd like to use him in a Thai gamefowl project. Asils, Shamos, and Thais are my favorite Oriental game breeds, but Ivan looks closer to a Thai than to an Asil or a Shamo. Plus, Kong of Xyooj Aviaries is in close proximity to me and would be a great source of breeder birds if he decided to sell any of his stock.

God bless,
~Gresh~

Orpington, Delaware, Rhode Island Red, Plymouth Rock, Sussex, Dominique, Brahma, Cochin. These are all great calm breeds. My personal favorite is the orpingtons. A suggestion is getting two each of the varies orpingtons. Buff, Black, Chocolate, Golden Laced, Jubilee, etc.

My brahmas are so darn noisy!!!! Beautiful, but noisy!!!

I love my rhode island reds, Easter eggers, cuckoo marans, barred rocks, d'uccle, Faverolle, Cochin, ect...

The cochin and brahma lay the least amount of eggs. The EE's and RIR's lay everyday and are jumbo sized eggs.

I handle my chicks daily and they are all super friendly and lap chickens! My d'uccle is extremely smart and very aware of her surroundings. A real treat to have and everyones favorite.

I think it all depends on the individual chicken. My cochin lays better than my RIR - and they are LARGE too.

Can't wait to have eggs from my EE's!
