Best breeds & sources for brown egg laying?

Yes, only 3 at least for now, and all brown eggs sounds great ;o)

OK, Rolling Hills Estates. Is that the one I grew up near in SLO?

Uh sort of, as far as being in the same state, but SLO is couple hours drive away. I wouldnt go with an EE they most likely wont lay brown eggs. Check out Dare2DreamFarms.com They have a cute farm with a great assortment out in Lompoc, Ca near santa barbara.

You can also wait around until springtime when feed stores and Tractor Supply Co get in the chicks from hatcheries. It sounds like what you want will be satisfied by that.

I would recommend Plymouth Rocks. Barred are the most common. They are friendly, lay well and I haven't really heard much about them going broody (mine haven't, ever). My Australorps are NOT friendly. They're the most skittish of my current flock. My rocks are always running to me when they see treats in my hands and they lay large brown eggs.

I love Speckled Sussex. They are the calmest friendliest chickens I have ever had but I would not say they fit the bill here. If I had to limit myself as you describe, I would get a Production Rhode Island Red or a Black Star sex link.

Great suggestions, Thanks!!

I would have to agree with you RoosterRanch. my speckled sussex are very friendly and boy do they talk! but if ya want eggs ya can't beat my black and gold sexlinks!!! well yes ya can! My white leghorn OUT LAYS all my girls but she lays "White" eggs. they are so big, they won't fit in the egg carton

If you want a good layer, I'd probably go with one of the hybrids. ISA, production red, etc. not as sexy but dependable.
I did have naked necks for awhile, they lay enormous brown eggs and a lot of them. Very gentle, sweet birds, too. Very hardy, good for heat and cold. A nice alternative if you want something different.

Great, thanks for that. I have heard some good things about Black Star sex link but haven't found a local source. I have maybe found a source for Red Star pullets though, which is maybe similar. I will look out for Specked Sussex too
