Best Breeds with Children

Silkies,cochins, and brahmas
I've had them all and they are so mellow so it's my F2 NHRxBO

Of the chicks we have in the brooder right now, ( wyandottes, EE, brahmas and orpingtons) I have to say the brahmas are the sweetest and most people oriented of the bunch. There are one or two birds of each of the other types that are friendly too, but every single one of the brahmas is all about the people. I've not had brahmas before and have been absolutely in love with these girls since we brought them home.

I got new chicks when y kid was 2, breed not as important as exposure while they grow up, he would hold "his" chick everyday for 10 min or so. now they are grown he can still walk up to her (everyday, sometimes against my wishes) and pick her up and carry her around the yard, she just lets her legs dangle and loves the attention he gives her. Oh we have EE from the feed store, now I'm starting show ameraucana chicks, and he will Waller them as well

Same here. We have a mixed flock of layers, but the Brahmas are by far the sweetest and the ones that like to cuddle the most.

Also, around here in texas if you rent a "petting zoo" for a b-day party they always bring a few silkies that are very friendly

Cochins are VERY good with kids, but not so great in the egg department. RIRs are perfect. They lay many eggs, and are very docile when tamed. I've always thought highly of them, anyways...

I strongly recommend getting more chicks than you plan on keeping, and keeping the friendliest. There are many people on Craig's list that will be happy to take on some semi-socialized good layers. In my current set of 8 mixed chicks, the friendliest is a leghorn. My chickens, the nicest ever was an Amerauricana, who used to come and asked to be picked up when I walked into the yard. My friend's Amerauricana was standoffish and skittish. Its the individual chicken as much as the breed.

I appreciate everyone's suggestions. We got Buff Orphingtons and RIR's. I made the mistake of not ordering in time, so I will definitely add to my flock next year.

Here are our babies!
