best broody breeds.

If you're getting your SLWs from a hatchery that lowers the odds that they'll go broody. Not saying it won't happen, but broodiness is a trait that is bred out of a lot of hatchery birds.

Game hens are the best you will find. They lay 12 eggs all go broodie. I hatch all my chicks under hens. 25 years ago me and a freind crossed a white silkie cock on gray leghorn cross hens. All chicks came out dark but they were very good broodies. I set goose eggs under them with very good results. The 2-4 genarations very very colorful. We did find if you got the silkie feathering the eggs don't hatch as good in cold weather.. I would never use silkies for that reason. At that time I didn't know about Games.

OEGBs, Silkies, Wyandotte, Red Sexlinks, and Black Sexlinks have all been good broodys for me. To find a broody out of a bunch of sexlinks isnt always common but the ones that have gone broody for me have always finished the job.

thanks for the replies. the general consensus seems to be game hens. just worried about them being too aggressive. especially the roos. never had any experience with silkies or cochins. would really hot humid weather be a problem for them hatching eggs? do bantams go broody more often than regular chickens?
