Best Broody Hen

Two other breeds that are good broodies are Barnevelders, (hard to come by though) and Marans. I've had two out of my 3 Marans go broody, one we gave day old chicks to without any trouble and the other is sitting on eggs right now.

i dont even know about broody hens and stuff like that but my buff orpington chicks are the sweetest and they are like the mamas to the others they just let the others lay on them and sleep with them in a big pile of fuzzy feathers and they are beautiful too so u know this is just my thoughts on good mama hens!

I have Silkies and they're very broody. Just recently - I had 8 out of 10 of my Silkie girls at some stage of the broody cycle. Since then a few have "weaned" their chicks, so I'm down to 5 broodies right now! :

I have an American Game Hen and she went up against a german shepard/chow whenever she was on her 1 egg. The chick hatched, but the little guy didnt make it. Now she has 14 chicks following her around. She is a very proud Momma.

My Partridge Rock went broody about two weeks ago and she' great! She insisted on nesting on the ground next to the next boxes so I let her be until her first nest was upset by a snake (she's ok! but he made off with all the eggs) so I moved her the next day to my "brood house" with a new clutch and she adjusted to it like a champ! She's big and fluffy and can cover a lot - right now she's got 4 duck and eight chicken eggs under her!
I candled them last night and every one was growing! She was pretty ticked at me though

We had standard Cochins, they were horrible. The stomped the chicks to death. The best broodies we have are standard Cornish.
