Best broody hens

I will be purchasing more chickens soon, and I wanted to add broody hens to my small flock. If anyone has any recommendations on breeds or experience with broody hens please share!

Cochin bantams, silkies, and game breeds like Old English Games all go broody a lot.

I love my pheonix hens. Cornish hens also go broody but they're not quite as gifted about raising babies without being separated from the flock

Orpingtons are good at making good broody hens. They are my favorite breed for that. I’ve also had a New Hampshire hen to go broody and raise chicks too.

I once had a Cochin hen that was bound and determined to hatch a box of iris bulbs. If I was selecting a broody, I would choose Cochins. Besides they are cute and fun to have around.

Silkies . Mine has raised several clutches. Not just a reliable and committed sitter, but also a feisty mumma hen and raises them all the way to adulthood not just adolescence. Superb mothering skills.

My grandmother used Buff Orpingtons to hatch duck eggs. It was sad but funny when those baby ducks discovered water. Those poor broodies would just about lose their minds.

I’ve never seen that first hand but, I’ve heard my mother say the same thing.

My buff Orpington did a perfect job. Went broody at 7 months old
