Temp is mild here in Ireland, when it does get hot in the summer they’ll usually hang around the trees. The feathered feet can be a problem if poop gets stuck to them or if the run is muddy, I usually dump a load of wood chips around the run to keep down the mud and i keep the coop as clean as possible. they free range around the Feild during the day aswell.

Thank you for replying and sharing the pics!! I live in FL and it is brutal at times. I would say Summer, but this week its going to be upper 80's and humid. I thought it was February and still Winter, but ... I will admire yours!!

What breeds do you already have?

I’m not sure I got them from a family friend, the hen is black with white/gold speckled neck and rooster same breed is very colorful the pictures I have as my profile are them.

I agree, this was my Gladys on hubby's lap. She would just hop right up. She loved to be held. Last week a fox got her. I have been so heart broken. It happened so fast. Right now I don't want another lap chicken and I blame myself for loosing her.

Can you tell me the breads of my chicken? I have 6 of them. 1 egg laying hen called patties, 3 younger hens called Brownie, Whitey and blacky; and I have two chicks around 4 w old named Naturey and Faturey.

I agree with cmom and alex. The best chicken is the one you raise! I have jersey giants and they are big and sweet. I had a brahma, but he was a rooster and I sold him (also nice). I have Rhode Island Reds that are great and red stars that are so entertaining following the rooster from place to place, as they are in love with him it seems. I have Sadie, a speckled Sussex with the best personality of all! They are all wonderful and I wouldn't trade any of them. Maybe you should ask yourself what eggs you want. I love all the different colors and want to get some white layers and some olive eggers too for more variety. I have mostly brown layers and a few EE's that give me blue eggs. Almost all home/hand raised chickens are wonderful friends!

NOT hybrid layers, that's for sure! Like friendliness, I'm sure it depends on how they are raised and their environment. In general I would try to avoid hatchery chickens and buy from breeders, as hardiness and vigor are not on a hatchery's priority list, but is with most breeders.
