Best Chicken to buy for a pet chicken to keep in the backyard?

Buff Orpingtons!!!!!!! Friendly and docile. Calm and good egg layers! I live in VA and mine are good in the humid heat of the summer, but you will want to make sure their pen has lots of ventillation in the summer. Winters here they tolerate well too, and I am sure our winters are less mild than yours. Two of them should be happy together. Make sure you get females, or you have to be able to tolerate alot of mating if one is a male. And two males kept together would not be great.

Silkies or Cochins make good pets. They are cuddly tame and bantams make the best pets and are small enough to take with you. But get atleast three, one roo and two hens. that would be best. Bantams rule.

Another vote for Barred Rocks! We have two and they are our favorites! They have so much personality although they do tend to talk back!

I guess it just depends on what your taste is....many breeds can be awesome little pets! I love my silkies, sizzles, and seramas & polish bantams. But as far as standard size birds go I love my speckled sussex, orpingtons, cochins, for friendliness!

I have Silkies and Buff Orps and both are great pets. I live in Southern Ky and both made it thru winter and so far this summer. I never added any heat during the winter either.

Barred Rocks are the friendliest that we've had. Our Buff Orpingtons are a close second. Both breeds are excellent layers too.

You didn't mention if you have children. If you do, buff orpingtons are a good all round, sturdy choice. In any breed, some are more gentle than others so get at least 3...

I LOVE my BOs!! Honestly though, my oldest RIR is the most friendly. She even comes when you call her by name.

Plymouth Rocks, Orpingtons, Austrolorps, Brahmas, Cochins, Delawares, and Rhode Island reds to name a few birds that are friendly and cold hardy.
