I grew up in a condo. I've never had a yard until now. When we first bought this house I briefly thought about chickens, and then decided against it - it was so far outside of my comfort zone. Fast forward 4 years and we brought home 8 chicks. We lost one that first night (it was pushed out of the heat). Went back to replace it and was given a weak suckling for free. So, now we have 9. And I am LOVING raising these babies. My 4 kids are learning so much. Every day we wake up excited to see how our girls have changed. I'm going to be sad when they move from pur brooder/pack and play into their new coop. But I'm even excited to work on this project with my husband.

Going on this unknown journey has been so amazing, and I'm very grateful for this forum. It has made this experience so successful.

So cute! It's a great process to watch. They're going through their "awkward and scruffy" phase at the moment, but I can tell that they will be quite the pretty flock when they grow up!

Chickens are amazing little pets! I never had chickens until we moved out to some land. But now we live back in town. Specifically bought a house for the huge backyard for our chickens. Cant imagine a chickenless life

We have plans to finish this weekend. A week before the girls are 6 weeks old.

Awe! Congratulations! They love to eat treats from your hand. Ages? Breeds?

They are 4 weeks old. We have a white leghorn, 2 Americaunas (bad spelling), 2 EE, 2 wyandotte (silver laced and golden), a Buff Orpington (wish I had bought more of those sweeties), and a golden sexlink.

Every day we wake up excited to see how our girls have changed. I'm going to be sad when they move from pur brooder/pack and play into their new coop.

I couldn't agree with this more. The coop kit arrived yesterday but (for today, anyway) I'm in no hurry to move them out of our pantry. I love hearing them peeping good morning when I come into the kitchen to make coffee on the dark mornings.

Years ago we had chickens, my daughter was young, and it was a great experience for her (along with the pigs, goats and rabbits over her youth)....but my attitude back then was just "livestock." The RIR roosters were nasty and I didn't enjoy going in the coop at all.

Fast forward 20 years and this is a totally different experience. I especially love observing their behaviors, and how they respond and interact with us. I have named them and at 2 weeks can already notice some traits that distinguish one or two of them from the others. The eggs which my roommate is looking forward to aren't even in my consciousness anymore, I'm just enjoying these birds for their own sake. (Which is not to say there's not a tasty omelette in my future this summer, lol).

Just wait 2-3 more days and the stink will be so bad you will throw up....even if you clean it every day.

But otherwise, I'm very excited for you!
