Best egg laying duck breed? (+ more questions)

Hello everyone! I am planning on getting a couple of egg laying ducks I just want a good layer and cold hardy breed. I would also like a breed that can’t fly and is friendly. What should a duck diet consist of? Also, what is the best setup? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Great laying breeds are: khaki Campbell and Indian runners. They can’t fly.

Sliver Appleyard are good layers. Also beautiful and Docile. They can't fly.

Khaki Campbell’s cayugas silver appleyards magpies and Indian runners, we keep them in a kiddie pool with a heat lamp and pine shavings also got a 5 gallon water dispenser for them because they drink ALOT of water and have to have water at all times while eatin because they will choke on there food with out water.

Can’t believe this thread didn’t get more hits! So Kristen, what breeds did you get and are they laying yet?

Had I seen this thread I would have said there’s lots of good layers out there, but your best ones are going to be Khaki Cambels of course, and your layer hybrids such as Metzer Farms White Layer and Golden 300.

The hybrids are just Khaki Cambel crosses which I have always wanted to try, but the wife doesn’t wanna do ducks again. She loved the Whelsh Harlequin‘s personality, but hated the mess. So it’s just chickens at the moment...

Khaki campbell....they can fly(or can a little bit) cuz they are a light wight breed.

Don’t forget about Rouens! Daphne is an extremely reliable egg-layer (1 per day, except when molting). She is also friendly, full of personality, and decently intelligent in comparison with other ducks I have known.

Edited to add: Also, she can’t fly, except for short bursts when really really excited (6 inches off the ground, 3 feet forward, and done).

Tell that to my girls! I put sliced tomatoes outside while the ducks are in their pool": »Houston we have lift-off« my girls are flying downhill and Donald, my drake, shows up empty handed… (too heavy for lift-off)
I have compiled the information about the most popular breeds into an Excel sheet to make comparison for me easier, i like to buy some more Duckies in Spring who are calm, good layers and friendly.
My five Indian Runners are nice and funny, but somewhat squeamish TouchMeNots. Can't confirm that they're good layers, mine are still too young, i'm afraid that has to wait until spring too.
