Best Egglayers

The white leghorns really do lay an egg almost every day, even in the winter. They're large white, just like the store bought ones on the OUTSIDE (but obviously pasture raised when you crack them open! YUM)
They're not the best for PETS, but they're ok the more you're around them the better they are. They are very light and therefore fly out very easily.
I don't have that problem with my sexlinks.

I have a red sexlink hen who is the queen of the flock. She took more days off during the winter and even stopped laying for a week or so in December. During the summer she matches pace with the Leghorns though, and I thoroughly enjoy having her around as a PET. She lays slightly smaller, rounder eggs than the Leghorns and they have really tough shells, but with the mixed breed I gather (from BYC) that there is a lot of variation.

my EE's lay beautiful blue eggs EVERYDAY! I love them. Everyone has to have at least one.

For brown eggs the best I have are Red-sex links. The best white egg layers are white leghorns.

While many of my varieties stopped producing during the winter (the anconas, EE's, Hamburgs and others), the Red Stars (red sex links) and Black sex links were great. The RIR's slowed down but still produced some.

I'm having the Same Problem:p Not enough eggs:/

Was just given 11 more girls today...to add to my 20 Red Links (& 6 Silkies)
There are 8 RIR & 3 Barred Rocks so I got my fingers crossed for tomorrow's
egg collection.

Isn't this hobby fun!? I am soooo addicted to my chickens...it's crazy!

Hey kmoranjr !!! I'm next door to Wareham....Rochester.
I have RIR among others. They started to lay just B 4 Xmas. They went from pullet size eggs to large to jumbo eggs with double yolks within about 10 days. Evening out on egg size now but still laying lg to jumbos. My girls are sweet but can be pushy...I'm bad.....just a walking treat machine. I also have: Ameraucans, SL Wyandotts and GL, Speckled Sussex, These are newer and seem to develop lgr eggs more slowly then the RIR.

I have 3 regular customers and we also eat quite a few of them. I had been averaging 6 eggs a day and about 3 weeks ago they started to slow down. There was a problem with a frozen waterer and my son locked them out of their coop for a day and a half ( nice strong covered run so they were safe) In the last day or so they went back up to 5-6 daily. so to answer your question I sell 3-4 doz. a week

Hello Liz, my birds are almost 1 year old, we got them last april. We did get a few double yolkers at first but havent seen them in a while. Ive read here that the doubles are caused by a glitch in the egglaying system. the same glitch also causes soft shells. we did have those also but like the doubles have not seen them in a while.

I would like to get about 12 more hens so im looking for a new coop or small shed i can convert. Since you live close if you know anyone that has something like that, could you email me ?
thanks , kevin
