Best flowers/plats/bushes etc for run

What types of plants are best for a run/outdoor area I already have a huge honeysuckle that provides shelter for them. Is it better to plant things in pots or directly into the ground? my initial idea was a rose bush or any kind of ornamental grass but I'm open for better suggestions if any. thanks

Existing established plants will likely be ok up to about 2ft off the ground where they will jump up to eat foliage; anything on the ground will basically be gone in short time. Trying to start new plants in the chicken area? Good luck with that unless you've got fencing to keep them off them, or are frequently rotating out potted plants when they get torn up.

I find small citrus plants to survive the chickens onslaught and provide scented blooms also shade. Although I did bonsai my tree to stay small.
