And the .17 is pretty frangible, so missed shots are likely to break up, right?

The .17 is awesome. Better on coyotes that a .22 or even a .22 Magnum. Fast little bullet (3550 fps) that gets the job done. And more accurate than the other two. Great for turtles. I have a Marlin .17 HMR. I love it. Hardly even pick up my Ruger 10/22 anymore.

You want a Glock 40 for dat. And some gold teefees. Or a Tech 9 or Mack 10.

I tend to go along with the old adage that says: "Take enough gun."
Even well placed shots, if fired from marginal cartridges, don't do the job intended. There are many variables working against you, far more than you think.
Now, the 44-40 and 7mm Mauser are enough. Big slow moving slug for knock down punch inside 100 yds. (.44-40) and high velocity bullet for longer range, flatter shooting (7MM). They'll do for most situations.

I'm not one to generally recommend ammo that is so far down the popularity list, however. At least for most folks who are more into chickens than guns.

Something like a .44-40 (an old black powder revolver round) and the 7mm Mauser (a European rifle round) are wholly adequate for their purpose, but may not be readily available in all locales.
The popular equivalents would be the .44 Magnum/Special and something like a .270 WIN.
Both the .44 Mag/Sp and the .270 WIN are available in rifles and are very common.

(Were it me I'd prefer the 7mm-08, the modern duplicate of the 7mm Mauser. But again, not as common in all locales).

It suprised me but the 7mm Mauser ammo is available at Wally World as is the 44-40. But if you can't find ammo you like try Gene Sear's Supply in El Reno, they have a website too and your local gun shop can order from them. Have you ever seen over 100 Browning Belgiums in one spot in all the grades made? Or an original Winchester 44-40 saddle rifle? They have them. Sometime I go there to just drool!

Well, just warning... but my husband bought me a BB gun... I've had a few attacked on my birds from dogs and an owl we think. Well, it has occured to me that I NEVER have the gun handy when I need it! Its just up in the house and not close at all. I also seem to have to deal with everything with what I have in hand, a shovel, a mug...whatever! That's just how it works out I guess.... good luck!

P.s. - I got a duck lost to a turtle by the way about 2 months ago, so I feel you on the shock of that one!

vfem:

I've got four drakes who wander around the yard eating my tomato plants, knocking over old ladies, and being all around foul-mouthed. Can you mail me this turtle you speak of, please?

Do you want to see the turtle I have to deal with!? For real... I can't wait until its caught and hauled away already!!!

This is what is in our pond we are yet to catch!

Yea a decent .22LR will take care of most critters and a shotgun would give you versility in ammo,a slug & multi slugs from buck shot to birdshot. They make it easy to hit snakes. For coyotes, bobcats and the such up to small deer I like a .223.Larger deer I like my .308
