I need to order some replacement hens. I have the red sex link now. They don't seem to be all they're cracked up to be. I get about 2/3 of the hens giving an egg a day. That's not so great for first year and second year hens, right? I feed them well too and they are on grass.

So what is the best and most consistent layer? I can't afford to waste feed on hens that won't produce.

wow-1 egg a day per hen is sweet to me! I only have 3 hens right now-but when I get 1 each-Im jumping for joy-they are big brown and soo tasty!--2 hens are BO's and 1 RIR

Being new I can only offer from my experience. The chickens I tend lay aprox. 4 eggs a day. there are 5 hens. One is a leghorn, two are rocks, and two are buffs. However, somedays I wind up with as many as 8 eggs (guess some are laying double). I think it's how much you feed them. The other day I missed getting the eggs and I had 14 in just 2 days! go figure.

My BA's lay very well, so far an egg a day, I've had as many as 3 eggs in 36 hours every now and then, and still 2 the next day. My PR's are just predictable. Egg a day birds with some skipping for doubleyolks every now and then. Dont blame them for that one.

I'm rearing Delawares and hear they lay quite well. We'll see.

Most people I know with Rocks in any color have good solid layers.

All chickens perform better their pullet year ((more eggs))! After they molt they normally lay an egg or 2 less but, their eggs get bigger! (can't even fit in carton most of the time)

So, for family this is great!

For someone selling eggs not so good!

Most people I know that sell eggs keep breeders (New Hampshire Roo & 3 White rock hens) hatch every January & by the end of June you have New layers & can sell the year olds gals for $6

My leghorn and RIRs and wyandott's lay every day. my feeder broke and the weather is nasty so i don't want to put a lot of feed out on the ground and with me not feeding them like i used to, well today i got 0 eggs out of 4 hens. if u give them their share of feed, they'll pay u back.
