The subject says it all..

I would like to know what others think. What have you experienced to be the best egg laying chickens in terms of egg production per year.

Secondly what about the largest egg layers?

I eventually would like to dwindle down my breeds to the two best egg layers I can get my hands on. maybe the one thathas good average sized eggs with large production numbers adn then also the one that can lay the jumble sized eggs.

Thanks for the help

Hi,

I don't know that I can answer all of your questions, but I find that my RIR's are my best layers. I have 4 of them and get 4 eggs a day most of the time, with one skipping a day every now and then.

I don't have enough experience with different breeds but my BO's lay considerably larger eggs than my RIR's, on the average, anyway. Now that my Leghorns are no longer pullets (just turned a year old in March), their eggs seem to have gotten larger, also. My very old RIR's (at least 3 years, maybe more--purchased them as adults and not sure of the age) lay huge eggs (around 3 ounces quite often--they don't even fit into regular egg cartons) and are still pretty consistant layers. Hope this helps!

Leghorns are probably the best bet bet for production egg-laying. They are like an egg-laying machine. They very seldom go broody and don't eat as much as large chickens. RIR's are a safe bet for steady large eggs. Good Luck,,,, Woody

Rir, sexlinks and barred rocks are the most steady layers of the brown eggs. White eggs from experience has been my brown leg horns. The largest eggs are my jersey giants and delawares. Most time my jerseys eggs need to go in a jumbo sized carton.

I feel it's not the size, it's the quality. My sexlinks just started laying what I would call a medium egg. The yolk is 1/2 the size of any other I've seen. That means half the cholesterol. The albumin stand in the skillet at about 1/4" high because it is loaded with vitamins, minerals and omega 3 fatty acids. Since I like 4 eggs for breakfast every morning, my girls make it better tasting and a WHOLE BUNCH better for my health.

Leghorns are the best, but be aware that their egg production will fall off more rapidly than the brown egg layers. I like my Barred and White Rocks, Jersey Giants and RIR.
