Best personality and laying chicken for begginner chicken owners

How many eggs a week roughly are you hoping to get? And how many chickens would you be able to keep in the space you have. Orpingtons are a good shout, fairly decent layers, also can cope with smaller spaces and very docile, but not amazing layers like Leghorns and Rhode Island Red. As mentioned above each chicken can be different but on average certain breeds can be better laying or more calm and quiet than others. If you can let us know how many birds you can have/ what your expectations are for eggs (how many you’d like a week, size of eggs, colour of eggs) there would definitely be a few breeds that could be suggested.
I don't want over production. We want birds that cab be a little bit of pet birds. I'm just trying to male small profit by selling the eggs at the top of the driveway.

You're unlikely to make a profit, unless you're in an area where you can sell special eggs for a premium price, but you might pay for the feed.

I about break even selling POL pullets and a few eggs.

Be sure to check into your state laws about such sales. I only sell to friends and family right now because my state requires constant refrigeration and I don't have the facilities to do that at the moment.

The above said, if pets with benefits is your goal, then Go Ahead, Pick the Prettiest Chickens! :)

Go ahead and pick the sort of chicken you think you'll enjoy the most. Any of the common "farmyard" dual purpose breeds would probably suit you.

Beware of the production layer breeds unless you're willing to cull because they're prone to reproductive issues after their first year or two.

Like @3KillerBs said selling eggs from a backyard flock on a small scale won’t make much profit. Would you be able to have a rooster? Selling fertile eggs can tend to be more profitable if you are only looking to keep one breed.
I would recommend orpingtons, you’ll get a decent enough amount of eggs and they can be very good as pets.
And if you were to be able to have a rooster, having pure breed fertile Orpington eggs could make some good money.

I am A beginner, I have welsummers, I love them they are so sweet, never bully the new babys, great egg layers, my welsummers have both went broody and I gave them new chicks from the incubator, mom #1 has 6 week old chicks and she is going broody again!! They are my best mommy's, I love them, my leg horns are only 6 months old no interest in mothering but I had them since they were baby's so they let me hold them, the others will not, I also have a mix that looks like green legged partridge, they aren't sweet, mothering, nor do they like attention but I get 8 eggs every day from my 8 hens I have, sometimes I think one of them is laying 2......ivlove my chickens I have baby EEs I'm excited to raise up to lap chicks
Oops I meant at the beginning to say my astrolarps are so sweet, they never bully the baby's.....I don't know why I said welsummer 2x.....

You want sweet personality..and..quiet? No such thing as quiet when that egg is laid. 😄 I live me a leghorn! And the red sexlink. I've owned a lot of chickens..thise two..and I'll add one more..Speckled Sussex. ❤️❤️❤️

My family is having a debate on what chickens to get. We have no idea what breeds to get. We live in a wet area with coldish winters. Trying to get mass production to make money off of while providing ourselves. We want chickens with good personalitys but are quiet We are getting alot of mixed information. Ones we've thought about are Ameraucana, Barred Plymout Rock, Buff Orpingtion, Austerlorps, Novegen, Isa browns, Rhode Island reds and Red Sex links. Anything on them would be very helpful.
I purchased 8 Barred Rock chicks assuming one or two would die. None died, they are a little over a year now, and we get WAY too many eggs for the two of us adults.
We get 7-8 eggs/day. They were quiet and cuddly as pullets but not cuddly anymore and have an entertaining vocabulary. Most of the eggs are large, varied tan shells, and delicious!

Australorps!!! They lay really well for a long time, they are hardy and quiet.

I have Rhode Island Reds and I think the hens have a great personality. Roosters can be not as nice sometimes. They can be loud but mine don't make noise all day, just when they're laying and doing the egg song (but all chickens do that) or when they see me and know it's either time for treats or to go out free ranging in the yard. Pretty mellow and friendly for the most part, not very flighty. They lay tons of eggs, you'd be hard pressed to find one that lays more reliably.

I would suggest Plymouth Rocks, Australorps, Orpingtons, or Sussex as well. They generally are friendly, personable, and lay a good amount of eggs.

I would avoid production breeds like ISA Brown, any sex-links as if they are pets they will be more prone to reproductive disorders.

Good luck!
