m.kitchengirl :

I think the runs are easier to build & much more sturdy than buying one of the pre-fab contraptions.
I bought a pre-fab chicken coop (I am not at all handy) but couldn't find a duck house to fit my needs/budget, etc. I built my duck house & it has held up really well this fall & winter. I plan to add it to my expanded duck/chicken duplex in the Spring because it is still going strong.
(It is not the prettiest thing in the world, and I really had my doubts about it's "design", but the darn thing is doing WAY better than my prefab chicken coop, which will wind up on the bottom of the big burn pile in the spring.)

The hardware cloth is the only part that is expensive, but it is worth it. If you only do the bottom apron & 6"-8" in it you can do the rest in something easier to work with and a little less expensive. I used a ton of 1/4" hardware cloth though, and next time would definitely just get some old pallets & build the rest out of those. Even buying my wood at Home Depot when i bought the hardware cloth I only spent $180 on the enclosure. Just about what I spent on my prefab chicken coop. (That is WAY too small. I'll be able to use the enclosure I built as a breeding/brooding/infirmary pen for years.) I have also seen some great runs built using PVC & hardware cloth. Those look very portable compared with other types, if that is a consideration for you.

You should not feel guilty about wanting to continue to love these wonderful animals. What you should do is try to learn as much as you can from their loss & apply that knowledge to the next ducks you get. Which it sounds like you are doing - getting a safe run area set up for them before they go outside. You honor your love for them by learning from the experience. It shows they are still in your heart.

ETA: I love my Anconas. I am terribly tempted by Welsh Harlequins, but am going to wait until I feel like I really understand and am serving the breed the best I can before I move on to add other breeds.

wow thanks for all that advice! hey, are anconas good pets if you hand raise them?

I would start checking out building plans for a run, just a basic, 10x6 or so. Sketch it up on paper or "paint" on the computer. Google might have a free design page? Once you have a plan, get on lowes.com or home depot and price lumber, 1/2 inch hardware cloth, and a larger welded wire for the upper portion and roof. Ft Knox isn't too expensive to build, cheaper than a dog run. You'll also need 2 medium/large hinges, a gate latch, and a carabiner (those little clips climbers use that people also put on their key chains) to secure the latch.

After you have a price quote for a secure house for them, then you could wait till Easter for when people get ducks and only keep them for a week or so before they realize what they've gotten themselves into. You'll be doing those ducks a favor! Last Easter I took in 5 of them to find them appropriate homes. They weren't the breed I wanted, but they still needed help. They were plenty tame from being carried around by kids.

Right now I have a black swedish hen that was rescued... she was raised alone in a rabbit hutch, she thought she was a dog. She was so very friendly, until my ducks taught her about being a duck and she became as rude as they are. Only coming around for food. Quackers used to come over for a back rub and would sit in my lap too! She has better things to do now I guess.

Once you have a little Ft Knox for them to live in, you can take your time on finding just the right ducks, and not have to worry about anything happening to them when they're safely penned up.

Most any breed can be friendly, though some like Runner ducks are a little more flighty and nervous. Not all, but it's common for them to be that way. If you wait until Spring, you should be able to find 2 drakes easy enough. The only worry I have is if they're buddies, you'd want them to have been raised together.

Muscovies get really fat, and drakes especially can't get far off the ground. My girl doesn't fly or roost like people have said.

I bought them from a breeder. They are very easy to find (craigslist if you don't know anyone that has them).

I haven't clipped wings. My chickens fly much better than my ducks. If you get them as ducklings they bond with you. My girl is a little shy, but we're working on it.

So you think Drakes would be good since thats what I want. I think I might want them now the only thing holding me back was that they could fly...and that they apparently had gnarly claws that slash the poop out of you if you try to pick them up.

By the way, the only place I have ever bought from was Metzer Farms though the California Hatchery has muscovies but they do not say when their birds come into stock. Right now most of them are out of stock so I may have to settle for whatever is at Metzer Farms...

By the way, do you know if you can get two different types of birds together? Like say a Pekin and a Rouen in the same package?

So sorry for ya loss

I hope you find some new ducklings soon

That is a wonderful idea. When we had to have our 161/2 year old dachshund put to sleep I said I couldn't do it again I was so heartbroken, and I'm sure many have said the same thing. But 3 weeks later I was so needing a little dog to fill my life, so we went and got another lil dachshund, she helped to heal the heartbreak and has been such a blessing to me. I think it would be wonderful if your parents go along with it to go ahead and get your ducks, you'll know just what has to be done to protect them and you'll be ready when you bring them home.

I also agree this is a good idea. I lost 2 muscovy girls and i went to the shelter to try to adopt some but the shelter doesn't adopt them out. i searched forever to look for a place near me that does but i couldn't find anything. i ended up buying them from a lady who never paid attention to her birds. mine don't come near me at all but my drake loves them. also when i lost my first bunny i had a new one 5 days later because i couldn't live without a bunny. she died 3 days before my birthday and i got a bunny 2 days after my birthday and he is a lover boy! don't feel guilty. your pets would want you to be happy. they won't ever be replaced because they all have their own personalities but sometimes we just can't live without love from pets. i totally understand

and i would go with muscovies. i raised my baby boy from a week old and he loves me. such a sweet boy but you have to teach them manners

I don't know where to buy any muscovies that I can get at a day old except California Hatchery but they require a minimum shipment of 3 ducklings and I can only have 2..
