best place to order chicks from?

Holy Cow the shipping charged at MPC are ridiculous. I am thinking I might look someplace else for that reason alone. I didn't think that they were a middle man, but I guess they are... so WHY are we paying them so much for just shipping them in the boxes THEY probably got them in? No idea. I do recommend MPC for the info they have. Good resource for what it's worth.

My Pet chicken is a middle man but you can order in smaller quantities and have them sexed. I have ordered from them many times and only had one issue which they took care of immediately and made good.

I have only ordered from McMurray, but where are you located? Orange County.....what state? I think everyone has an orange county..and what is the closest hatchery to you???? Especially now in this heat.

I ordered my pullets from MPC and I thought they were great!!. I had gotten their 25 pullet variety pack on sale so shipping was free! I paid $47.50 for 25 pullets. They were 100% accurate with sexing. I did have one that was DOA and another had a deformed leg. I must say their customer service was excellent!!! For that reason alone I would order from them again. They credited me immediately for the chicks and they talked my teenage daughter through applying the band aid trick to the ones leg! I was not home when they were delivered so my teenage daughter was freaking out about this poor deformed chick. She called and they spent alot of time on the phone with her and sent her literature through e-mail to help her learn how to help the little ones leg. I was very impressed with that!!! I would definitely place another order with them again!!!

I am going to offer advice that I did not see posted here - - - -

I got my first chicks from somebody on Craigslist.
The first seller had ordered them in from a hatchery and was selling the extras. The second seller had hatched his own and was selling the extras.
In both cases, I got chicks that were 1 - 2 weeks old, healthy and active. I didn't have to worry about anybody dying in shipping.

Later, I wanted some chicks that I could not find locally. Those, I went to the feed store and did a special order through them. I ordered 4 chicks - - - didn't have to worry about them dying in shipment again ( the feed store only calls you if they arrive alive) and I didn't have to pay for shipping.

So, if you only want a small number of chicks - - - I recommend one of these options.

I think the extra cost is suppose to be because of the heater they ship when you order just a few chicks, not the box. There used to be an explaination of that on their page.

I see! I suppose that's a LITTLE better, But it still seems that their shipping is higher than other places I've looked into. Even places further from my location, for the same amount of chicks. I think it would certainly be worth it to buy from them if you're "buying in bulk" so to speak. Other than their shipping I think they are a good site to check into.

When I went through our local feed store and ordered 4 chicks - - - my cost was $2.50 - $3.00 per pullet depending on breed choice.
No Additional Charges were tacked on - - - PLEASE - check with your local feed stores and see if any will place a small order for you when they place a large order for themselves.

You will have to ask around - - - I only have 1 out of 4 feed stores that placed the order for me without hesitation. Two others were willing to place an order, but it was like pulling teeth to get a commitment from them.

I got 5 from Mypetchicken last week, all are doing well. shipping is high but overall the experience was positive and would deal with them again.
