Gorgeous birds Dave! If I were interested in that breed...I'd know where I'd be going!

Well good luck with em, with chickens you definitely get what you pay for. Buying the chicks is the least expensive part of the chicken endeavour, the feed, fencing, lighting, efforts, eggs..... + thousands of other expenses, for a mediocre flock of mediocre layers, I personally would choose the breed with extreme prejudice, it is definitely the most important and the least expensive part of chickening.

Several of my 37 hens end up with male pattern baldness with 7 roosters, I bet she'd be picked clean.

I had a hard time finding hatcheries near where I live too, and couldn't really afford the $35 shipping to get them online.. However! I found out that they sell day old chicks at Farm & Fleet! I'm not sure if there is one of those near you in central Illinois, but I would assume so. I got mine at the one in Montgomery, as I am from Joliet. I'm not sure if they sell different breeds at different places or what not, when I got mine they had rhode island reds, which are purebreeds, and cinnamon queens(red star sexlinks). They also had bantams and ducks and other chicks, but the two I listed were the only guaranteed laying pullets. They came vaccinated, and at over a month old, my ladies are doing very well and growing very big. I hope this helps you!

We are northern Illinois but having a hard time finding specific breeds. We obviously only want a few to add to our group, so that makes it even harder.

Hi! Do have the breeder info for Montgomery? We are just south of Joliet and I am looking specifically for a buff orpington and a welsummer (both pullets) to add to our group. So, its nearly impossible to buy online and like you, the shipping is crazy. any info you have would be awesome.

The farm store near the railroad tracks, on Black Road, will order specific breeds for you in the spring. Tri-county Stockdale. If they can't get what you want, you can try to win an auction here and probably get a better, more heritage quality bird than from a hatchery.

Thank you Goldfinches :) stopped in there this weekend! they were really helpful and willing to order whatever :) where can I find info regarding the auctions on here? its easy to get lost and turned around on this website :)
