Best rooster for MIXED flock???????

Do you mean which roos will produce good egg-laying chicks? Your post kind of reads like you think the rooster is responsible for how much the hens lay, but that's not the case exccpt for when he's the daddy, then his genes affect how well his kids lay, but that's it... Hee hee I have this picture in my mind of a rooster supervisor encouraging or threatening the girls to lay more eggs...

As far as producing chicks, sex-links do not breed true, so I would stick with a heritage breed. If you get a RIR or NHR rooster, than you would be able to sex his chicks at birth with the white mothers (Delaware, white rock, SLW, leghorn? - red sex links), and the barred rocks (black sex links). NHR rooosters get pretty big, so his male kids could be good meat birds, especially mixed with Delawares or white rocks.

Have fun!

Thank you so much for your information! I think replacing a rooster every year might prevent one from turning in to a meany roo? That appeals to me, although our first one we have gotten sort of attached to. At the first sign of aggression though, time to send to camp. I have no problems with that.
As far as selling chicks, I would never try to get prices of purebred checks…..unless I had them. I used to show cats for several years and know about pricing for show animals vs. pet. I would just like to hatch some out for fun and sell them for a buck or two each. Saving that money to pay for processing and feed, along with egg money. I’m hoping for a broody hen or two next spring, but will also purchase an incubator soon. And I certainly wouldn’t want to offend anyone with show birds. That is a lot of work! I am hoping to get my girls into 4H when they are old enough.
I have a couple of questions about meaties I will post to that forum.

I do want a broody hen....but I am also going to purchase an incubator. Wow, I was hoping for a better ratio of hatches from an incubator. Guess I'll have to see what happens. I don't mind the mutt chicks....but will want to conintue to have the green and blue eggs so I'll have to add those chicks or get an Americana roo.....which could be my next roo. Our first roo was the typical accident......supposed to be a pullet. That's OK. It has given me many ideas as to how to manage my small flock!
