If you are rotating birds in and out of your flock, you want them early in the spring as possible, so that they ARE laying going into November and December. My three pullets kept me in enough eggs by laying faithfully for the long dark days of winter, while the rest of the older flock rested, and younger girls matured (I had a broody in August, what you going to do?) I am expecting by the end of February to have lots and lots of eggs.
But I was sure glad I had those March babies making eggs in December.
